The Weight Watchers diet is based on working out a certain about
of 'points' for each person depending on their weight, height, sex
and age. Each day you have a given amount of points to spend of
whatever foods you want to eat. In the first two weeks you are given
a 'power start' programme, where the points are initially a little
lower to boost the first two weeks weight loss.
How does it work?
By using the points system the dieters will end up taking in fewer
calories than they need to keep their weight stable, and so lose
weight. There are menus that can be followed or they can choose
their own meals using the extensive food lists with points values.
The diet lets the dieter choose if they want to spend all their
points on chocolate or have lots of lower fat choices. The Lower
the fat and sugar things are the less points they have allocated.
How much do you lose?
Its its claimed that an average weight loss of 1-2 pounds a week
will be lost.
Are there any possible side effects?
It could be said that because of the choice the dieter has in what
they eat, a less sensible person could use all their points on fatty
or sugary foods. Consequently not having a well balanced diet. However
apart from this no significant reports of side effects have been
shown.
What books are available on this diet?
Over the first 10 weeks of joining a class at weight watchers you
will receive 11 different booklets on the diet containing advice
and motivational ideas. There are also many cook books etc. that
can be purchased from the class leader.
